Hurricane Katrina brings
Employees, Jobs
When hurricane Katrina
hit Louisiana, tens of thousands of refugees moved to safer
ground in Texas. This has created an interesting
dynamic. There are many former Louisiana and Mississippi
residents looking for jobs--but many of their employers have
come with them.
A number of companies formerly in New
Orleans have opened new offices in Houston, and in other Texas
cities to a lesser extent. This means new jobs in Texas,
but the influx of job seekers means it might not be easy to
find a job right now.
The best opportunities are for skilled
workers in the Houston area. A number of energy firms
from New Orleans and the Gulf Coast decided to set-up shop in
Houston following hurricane Katrina. Many of these
companies had previously considered moving to Houston because
of its status as energy capital of the US, but the hurrican
pushed them to make the move.
Perhaps the fewest opportunities are
available for unskilled labor. Houston was the evacuation
destination for thousands of people that could not afford to
leave New Orleans by their own means. This has resulted
in a number of unemployed evacuees in
Houston.
