2009 Texas Job Outlook
Despite a general economic
downturn, 2009 looks to
be
a solid year for jobs
in Texas.
While the
rest of the country faces and uphill battle and falling home
values, Texas appears to be well positioned for hard
times. The state has seen job growth in manufacturing and
the oil industry, and the services sector continues to be
robust.
Texas' job outlook is good in part because
employers find Texas an attractive place to locate their
business. Why? People want to live here because of
the relatively low cost of living and sunny weather.
Compared to the coasts, Texas offers a good standard of living
for families.
But don't expect everything to be smooth
sailing this year. Some of Texas' biggest companies,
including Dell and Whole Foods, have hit stumbling blocks that
may result in slower job growth (or even declines).
Regardless, the state is well positioned compared to other
areas.
There
will also be new jobs created in the aftermath of hurricane
Katrina. A number of companies moved their
operations from New
Orleans and Mississippi to Houston.
